Purification money is not zakat: it is income that was never yours to keep, so it goes to charity without counting it as your own giving. Many scholars advise not claiming a tax deduction for it. Purifying does not make a non-compliant company permissible.

Everything is calculated in your browser from the figures you enter; nothing is stored or sent. Scholars differ on some of these rules, so treat the result as a careful estimate and ask a qualified scholar for a personal ruling. Information only, not investment advice. Where to find the figures

Impermissible income is usually interest income, listed under finance income in the annual report, plus any revenue from impermissible activities. Divide it by total revenue for the percentage, or by shares outstanding for the per-share figure.

Purindex shows interest income as a share of revenue on company pages where it has been calculated from a filing. Search for a company in the screener, or check it yourself with the Shariah ratio calculator.

Two methods

From dividends is the method most investors use and the one most screening services publish. Per share, from AAOIFI Shariah Standard No. 21, purifies your share of the company’s impermissible income whether or not it paid a dividend, which matters for growth companies that pay none.

Questions

What is dividend purification?
Shariah-compliant companies may still earn a small amount of impermissible income, usually interest on cash. Shareholders give away the matching share of their returns to charity so that they do not benefit from it.
How do I calculate purification?
With the dividend method, multiply your dividends by the company's impermissible income as a percentage of revenue. With the AAOIFI per-share method, divide the company's impermissible income by its shares outstanding and multiply by the shares you held and the fraction of the year you held them.
Do I need to purify if the company paid no dividend?
Under the per-share method in AAOIFI Shariah Standard No. 21, yes: the impermissible income still belongs in part to you as a shareholder. Under the dividend method, purification applies to dividends received. Scholars differ, so follow the view you rely on.
Can purification money count as zakat?
No. It is income that was never permissible to keep, so it is given away separately and is not counted as zakat.
Does purification make any stock halal?
No. Purification only applies to companies that already pass Shariah screening. A company with an impermissible core business or ratios above the limits is not made compliant by giving part of the income away.
